Overview

Institute for Economic and Social Research (LPEM FEB UI) established an independent institutional review board named Komite Etik Penelitian (KEP). KEP LPEM FEB UI is a review committee established to help in protecting the rights and welfare of human subject research.

The establishment of KEP LPEM FEB UI has been approved by the Office for Human Research Protection (OHRP) and has also received approval from the Federal Wide Assurance (FWA) for the Protection of Human Subjects. KEP LPEM FEB UI receives support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT Jakarta) through the CORE Funding at The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab Southeast Asia (J-PAL SEA).

Purpose of KEP LPEM FEB UI

Ethical review of research involving human subjects is crucial to ensure that any potential for harm is minimized and that the autonomy of the participants is respected. Researchers who are designing projects may not have sufficient objectivity to evaluate the potential harm either from the interventions or from the data collection procedures. Experience has shown that, while rare, abuses of human subjects may happen when researchers are responsible for regulating their own projects. They tend to focus on getting the research project done while neglecting the potential harm that could affect the subjects participated. An independent review process is a way to ensure that both researcher and human subject’s interest are respected.

LPEM FEB UI is establishing a formal review process for experiments involving human subjects in order to:

Ethical Framework

The KEP LPEM FEB UI will follow the ethical principles stated in the Belmont Report.  This report outlines three fundamental ethical principles for any human subject research:

  1. Respect for persons: To respect autonomy is to give weight to autonomous persons’ considered opinions and choices while refraining from obstructing their actions unless they are clearly detrimental to others;
  2. Beneficence: Maximizing benefits for the research project while minimizing risks to the research subjects; and
  3. Justice: Ensuring reasonable, non-exploitative and well-considered procedures are administered fairly (the fair distribution of costs and benefits).
